May 18: Awkward Moments Day

Okay, so I've been celebrating days just having camera issues and then no time to actually blog about it. so I decided to skip the days I haven't finished blogging and then go back in later (weekend probably) and fill in the gaps.

Awkward moments:

First I watched awkward moments on youtube: Julian Smith wins for the funniest awkward moments!!

Then I went out with a bunch of friends. Awkward things are bound to happen right. The bad thing about awkward is that sometimes you don't really want to tell people what was awkward! When I tell you that David told Michael he loved him it's awkward all over again and probably more awkward then before. So I won't share the most awkward thing that happened. However Michael did probably say the funiest thing on our trip. I was telling everyone that it was awkward moments day and he looked at me and said "Heather, you're an awkward moment waiting to happen." Hehe, guess I walked into that one.

So what's the most awkward moment I can think of. First it's telling people that you love them over the phone. I do this all the time and I've told numerous boys that I loved them followed up by a quick "oops, no I don't" which just makes things more awkward.

The number one most awkward thing ever happened is when I listening to an older someone talk about how no one should have kids because they are not worth the effort. I was slightly annoyed (I mean we were both someones kids) so I asked him if he'd even ever had kids. He responded "Yes and both of them died in their twenties." I laughed for half a second before realizing he was serious and then promptly apologized. That one is going to be hard to beat.

March 6: What does your name mean day?

I love knowing what peoples name means. I did a revisit to the past from when I last researched my name and thought I'd show you all and tell you what it means. I researched it one day (in those days I had spare time) and it has stuck with me so long that it has become the perfect definition of my name. Here it is:

I have recently done some research on what the name Heather means. The nicest meaning was “an evergreen shrub” but I decided that I must be useful for something! I invite you to share my wealth of knowledge about myself so that you can know what to expect of me!

Who am I?
Name: Heather
Gaelic Name: Fraoch
Latin Name: Calluna vulgaris

Where do I live?
Ireland, Britain, and Europe! (I must move a lot)

What do I look like?
Heather is an evergreen shrub. The prostrate, greyish, hairy stem grows up to 3 feet long and sends up branches 1 to 1.5 feet high. (I’m short and not all that nice to look at…. This isn’t very new :P)

Now here is my history, it’s a little brief because I’m only sixteen, but we’ll work with it.

When God first made the world, He looked at the bare and barren hillsides and thought how nice it would be to cover them with some kind of beautiful tree or flower. So he turned to Giant Oak, the biggest and strongest of all of the trees he had made, and asked him if he would be willing to go up to the bare hills to help make them look more attractive. But Oak explained that he needed a good depth of soil in order to grow and that the hillsides would be far too rocky for him to take root.
So God left Oak Tree and turned to Honeysuckle with its lovely yellow flower and beautiful sweet fragrance. He asked Honeysuckle if she would care to grow on the hillsides and spread her beauty and fragrance amongst the barren slopes. But Honeysuckle explained that she needed a wall or a fence or even another plant to grow against, and for that reason, it would be quite impossible for her to grow in the hills.
So God then turned to one of the sweetest and most beautiful of all the flowers - the rose. God asked the rose if she would care to grace the rugged highlands with her splendor. But the rose explained that the wind and the rain and the cold on the hills would destroy her, and so she would not be able to grow on the hills.
Disappointed with Oak, Honeysuckle and Rose, God turned away. At length, he came across a small, low lying, green shrub with a flower of tiny petals -some purple and some white. It was Heather. (That would be me!!!)
God asked Heather the same question that he’d asked the others. "Will you go and grow upon the hillsides to make them more beautiful?" Heather thought about the poor soil, the wind and the rain - and wasn’t very sure that she could do a good job. But turning to God she replied that if he wanted her to do it, she would certainly give it a try. (Aren’t I wonderful) God was very pleased.
He was so pleased in fact that he decided to give Heather some gifts as a reward for her willingness to do as he had asked. Firstly he gave her the strength of Oak - the bark of Heather is the strongest of any tree or shrub in the whole world. Next he gave her the fragrance of Honeysuckle - a fragrance that is frequently used to gently perfume soaps and pot-pouris. Finally he gave her the sweetness of Rose - so much so that Heather is one of the bee’s favorite flowers. And to this day,Hheather is renowned especially for these three God given gifts.

Well there is my wonderful story. I thought it was so great that I just had to keep reading about myself. There is where I got to eat some humble pie! I may have had a great history, but my future needs a lot of work!

So forget about the past! What am I good for no a days?

1) Heather can be used for many medical purposes. (sounds good)
2) Heather when burned outside (with fern if your desperate) attracts rain. (This is where it get’s scary!)
3) One of the most common and effective ways of managing Heather is the age-old method of burning. (Go ahead and die laughing you know you want to!) Heather burning is necessary for a variety of different reasons. Traditionally however most burning is carried out in Spring, although some estates maintain that it is better to burn in the autumn. (I know I’m stubborn but I’ll change!! I promise!!!!)
4) Even to the present day, crofters and farmers rely upon heather as an abundant and efficient fuel for their fires. (great…)
5) The Skara Brae excavation in Orkney revealed evidence of beds in the form of stone boxes, lined with heather and dating as far back as 2000 BC. The original heather beds! (I’ve been told I’m a little bony but hey….)
6) Heather has many practical uses - from baskets and brushes to pot scrubbers and doormast. (So that’s why I always wash the dishes!!!)
7) (Best of all) Find Heather- great deals and low prices!! (I thought slavery was illegal!)

Needless to say, after awhile look up my name got old and really scary. I think its time for Heather’s to start paving their own future without the scary matches! Maybe that’s why it rains so much in Ireland. Hope you enjoyed this little look at myself. May your paths be strait and matches stay far away from your pockets!

March 5: Casimir Pluski Day

Monday was really busy at school, so I didn't do anything for Casmir Pluski all day except for wonder who in the world he was. Also, I would have worn casmir if I owned anything made out of that fabric, but I didn't so I wore cotton.

Apparently he's a general from Poland that saved General George Washington's life in the Revolutionary War. General George Washington goes on to be President George Washington so I should be thankful for the man. Here's a picture:

March 4: Do something Day

So March fourth was do something day! How do you celebrate do something day!? I mean what are you doing... celebrating do something day. So I decided to go through my day and then pick something interested that I did. So the most interesting thing I did on Sunday was drop a window on my hand.

Yup, that's right. Not even on purpose or in some vallent attmept to do something interesting. I was crawling out a window (which has never gone well for me) and as I was closing it, the window slammed down and landed on my hand.

The first picture is my hand a day after it happened, and the last is the my hand today! It's healing nicely. :)

Honestly, I can be thankful that I didn't break my fingers, and that I was able to get the window off of my hand (I was alone when it fell). I think I've officially learned my lesson after that incident. Anyway, what did you do for do something day?!?

March 3: National Anthem Day

March 3 is National Anthem day. The Star Spangled Banner (originally called Defense of Fort M'Henry) was chosen in as our national anthem in 1931. It was originally written by Francis Scott Key after he had been deterred on a British ship during the shelling of Fort McHenry. He penned the words after being relieved to see that the fort had survived and the flag was still flying. To celebrate this day I looked at all the verses of our national anthem, enjoyed some great recordings of it, laughed at awful performances of it, and took a few moments to remember how thankful I am for my country.

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

March 2: Dr. Sues' Birthday!

Happy Birthday Dr. Sues!! I am a huge Doctor Sues fan and I have been since I was little. I remember learning to read with books like "Hop on Pop" "Horton Hears a Who" "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Higgins" and "Green Eggs and Ham." These books are fun to read, easy to memorize and what I think makes them the best is that they still reach adults almost as much as children. When I was little I just liked the stories, but as I grew older I started to be able to read behind the story. For example, Horton Hears a Who was just a fun story of a brave elephant, but as you get older you start to consider more the implications of a person being a person even if you can't hear it or see it or it's so very small.

But today I learned things about Sues I've never learned before. Here are five facts I didn't know about Dr. Sues

2. Many Doctor Sues books are really political allegories

3. Dr Sues got his name when he was suspended (for drinking during the prohibition) from writing in a newspaper so he changed his name so that he could still sell articles and such.

4. Dr. Sues never had any kids and his wife said that he wasn't very comfortable around them.

5. Dr. Sues wrote in opposition to the "Dick and Jane" books which were the standard readers for children learning to read. He said they were dry, boring, and too easy for children. He wanted books that were stimulating, interesting, and challenged children.

Here are some of my favorite Dr. Sues Quotes:

I've had some person experiences with Dr. Sues that have helped me foster a love for them. One, I grew up reading them and then analyzed them as a younger teenage. Also, I love short witty quotes so I love looking up Dr. Sues quotes. But, I think what really changed what I thought about Dr. Sues was when I was in the play Dr. Sues the Sussical. I played Gertrude McFuzz from the story The One Feathered Tale of Gertrude McFuzz.

I was reading a joural article that I wrote shortly after the play called "What I learned from Gertrude McFuzz" I went ahead and copy and pasted a little bit of the entry. I had messed up my part and it really bothered me. I guess, according to the article, I was having a hard time shaking the feeling. I then realized that I was doing exactly what my character was doing. I wanted so bad to be noticed that I was messing everything up! I wasn't even doing what was right anymore.

"That's when I realized that I was making the same mistake that Gertrude made. People weren't going to notice me for my voice or acting, then were going to enjoy the play when everyone tried their best. Not perfect, the best that I had. That's when I enjoy what I"m doing and people enjoy the play."

I still struggle with wanting people to notice and be happy with me. I'm such a people-pleaser that often I care more about what people think then what God thinks of my life. It's great to think that three years later I'm still struggle with the same people-pleasing issues. :P Anyway, those are some of the reasons that I love Dr. Suess. I encourage you to let your kids read Dr. Sues and maybe today revisit your childhood and read some of his great books. Happy birthday Dr. Sues!

March 1: Peanut Butter Lover's Day

Happy Peanut Butter Lover's Day!!!

March 1st was Peanut Butter Lover's day so my dear friend Lexi (who's planning on helping me out) celebrated with me last night! Andrea lent me her peanut butter and together we ate a spoonful of peanut butter followed by reeses peices peanut butter cups. What would the world be like without peanut butter! Take a few minuet to appreciate this pasty food.

Here we are eating a spoonful of peanut butter. It was really dry and quite honestly not all that great. Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches, peanut butter and banana, peanut butter and cream cheese... all those things are good, but peanut butter alone, not so much.

Since Lexi and I aren't really peanut butter lovers, we ran out and found a peanut butter lover. He likes to eat peanut butter with numerous different things and even eats it plain. Happy Peanut Butter Lovers day Tyler. :)

Lastly, we ran into Jeremiah who is also a peanut butter lover. They both let us take their pictures and then we but the celebration ended becuase we went inside to do homework. Happy March 1 and Happy Peanut Butter Lovers day! :)

365 Holidays

Okay so I've tried to start a few different blogs with little to no success. Also, I try to keep some fun inside of my life and do things that remind me to relax and have fun. So I decided that when you have these two problems and you add them together, they you have the perfect blog! I'm going to try every day for the next 365 days to celebrate that day.
